Continuously occupied by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs since its completion in 1918, the Veteran Affairs Building fronts the northern edge of Lafayette Park, across from the White House. Built on the site of the distinguished old Arlington Hotel (1868-1912), the building is a relatively late addition to one of Washington DC's oldest and most prestigious residential neighborhoods. Initially financed by private investors, the building was a speculative development responding to the growing demand for government real estate during World War I.
