Replacing Damaged Or Missing Marble Baseboards

Technical Procedures Disclaimer

Prior to inclusion in GSA’s library of procedures, documents are reviewed by one or more qualified preservation specialists for general consistency with the Secretary of Interior Standards for rehabilitating historic buildings as understood at the time the procedure is added to the library. All specifications require project-specific editing and professional judgement regarding the applicability of a procedure to a particular building, project or location. References to products and suppliers are to serve as a general guideline and do not constitute a federal endorsement or determination that a product or method is the best or most current alternative, remains available, or is compliant with current environmental regulations and safety standards. The library of procedures is intended to serve as a resource, not a substitute, for specification development by a qualified preservation professional.

PART 3---EXECUTION

3.01 ERECTION, INSTALLATION, APPLICATION

  1. Remove and Replace Damaged Marble:
    1. Remove existing mortar and clean all areas to be patched. Remove dust and debris from the area using a stiff, fiber bristle brush.
    2. Cut back damaged marble to sound stonework.
    3. Cut replacement marble to fit uniformly using the smallest joints possible. Marble should match original and existing surrounding marble closely in color, thickness and texture in overall appearance. Wherever possible, use existing matching marble which may have been stockpiled in the building from previous work.
    4. Set marble piece in dry-set mortar following manufacturer's instructions. Do not extend mortar beyond edge of patch area.
    5. While the mortar is still soft and plastic, adjust new piece as necessary into its final location.
    6. Remove any excess mortar from the face of adjacent surfaces.
    7. Repair any adjacent surfaces that may have been damaged during the repair work.
    8. Support new marble pieces with boards to secure them in place until the mortar has cured.
  2. B. Clean and Polish the Marble:
    1. Apply cleaning solution using a clean cloth or sponge. Wash in small overlapping areas.
    2. Rinse cleaned area with clean, clear water by wiping the surface with a soft cloth.
    3. Dry the surface using a clean chamois or soft, dry cloth.
    4. Repolish any areas where polish is damaged or worn off.
