Restoration of Ornamental Copper Sheetmetal Fascia and Roof Flashing

Technical Procedures Disclaimer

Prior to inclusion in GSA’s library of procedures, documents are reviewed by one or more qualified preservation specialists for general consistency with the Secretary of Interior Standards for rehabilitating historic buildings as understood at the time the procedure is added to the library. All specifications require project-specific editing and professional judgement regarding the applicability of a procedure to a particular building, project or location. References to products and suppliers are to serve as a general guideline and do not constitute a federal endorsement or determination that a product or method is the best or most current alternative, remains available, or is compliant with current environmental regulations and safety standards. The library of procedures is intended to serve as a resource, not a substitute, for specification development by a qualified preservation professional.

  1. Submit a written outline of proposed method of custom fabrication of stamped or pressed sheet replacement elements. Accompany with dies, models, samples, or catalog illustrations as required to demonstrate ability to produce acceptable metal ornaments.

B. Samples

  1. One piece of a complete ornament assembly of formed sheet replacement elements; to demonstrate acceptable workmanship and finishing
  2. Sample will be returned to Contractor and may be used in the work, if acceptable

C. Shop Drawings: Furnish to show all assemblies with size, details of joining, provisions for weep holes, and specifics of material and fabrication.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Specialist: Required for all custom sheet ornament fabrication, assembly, and installation

  1. A master sheet metal artisan with demonstrated capability of cutting and forming sheet work to patterns
  2. Must have capability to fabricate stamped or formed sheet ornament to match designs, be already in production of such work, or able to do a custom set-up for limited production for this job

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Box, crate, palletize and wrap materials with weatherproof covering during shipment, handling and storage

B. Protect materials from exposure to elements and keep dry at all times

C. Painted or other factory finishes:

  1. Protect against impact, abrasion, discoloration, and other damage
  2. Replace damaged article, or refinish any damage to original condition, before installation and acceptance

  4. No torn or broken pieces
  5. Dies for stamping or pressing such as approved; metal dies are optional with fabricator

PART 3—EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Examine existing conditions, roof slopes, substrate and anchorage conditions to assure that the fabricated ornament and structure closely fit and will be properly anchored to resist the imposed loads without movement or damage to other work.

3.02 ERECTION, INSTALLATION, APPLICATION

A. Save and recondition all original fabric unless found to be unserviceable. Consult with the RHPO to determine if an original element is unserviceable. Flat sheet members may be replaced in kind where this facilitates the overall restoration and when original lines, dimensions, and workmanship are maintained.

B. New Work to Replace and Repair Existing

  1. Make to match existing work
  2. Follow details in SMACNA Architectural Manual
  3. Do all work, tinning, soldering, metal forming, etc., to highest standards as will produce weatherproof, properly seamed, joined, and soldered work, free from surface stains and wrinkled or buckled finishes
