PART 1---GENERAL

 

1.01 SUMMARY

  1. This procedure includes guidance on replacing damaged sections of concrete paving.
  2. See 01100-07-S for general project guidelines to be reviewed along with this procedure.
    These guidelines cover the following sections:

    8. General Protection (Surface and Surrounding) These guidelines should be reviewed prior to performing this procedure and should be followed, when applicable, along with recommendations from the Regional Historic Preservation Officer (RHPO).

1.02 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS

  1. Environmental Requirements: Maintain a constant temperature of 45 degrees F. or above for at least 48 hours prior to placing concrete.

PART 2---PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

  1. Portland cement
  2. Aggregate
  3. Clean, potable water
  4. Polyethylene moisture barrier
  5. Moisture-retaining cover such as waterproof paper, polyethylene film or polyethylene-coated burlap
  6. Expansion joint material such as cork strips

2.02 EQUIPMENT

  1. Spade
  2. Mechanical vibrating equipment
  3. Stiff bristle brushes
  4. Straight edge
  5. Bull float or darby

PART 3---EXECUTION

3.01 ERECTION, INSTALLATION, APPLICATION

  1. Remove deteriorated sections of paving to edge of sound pavers and down to structural slab.
  2. Remove dirt and debris from surface to receive new concrete.
  3. Cut and fit polyethylene moisture barrier to cover the area to receive new concrete.
  4. Position expansion joint material at edges of floor slab as required.
  5. Lay concrete in layers. DO NOT allow the concrete to harden before placing the next layer.
    1. Consolidate concrete while laying by hand spading, rodding or tamping along with using mechanical vibrating equipment.
    2. Work concrete thoroughly into corners.
  6. Fill area flush with adjacent sound concrete and level with a straight edge.
  7. Smooth the surface with a bull float or darby to eliminate humps or hollows.
  8. Finish surface to match adjacent paving.

3.02 ADJUSTING/CLEANING

  1. Protect newly placed concrete from excessive hot and cold temperatures. Cover with moisture-retaining cover while curing. Lap ends at least 3 inches and seal with waterproof tape or adhesive.
  2. Allow to cure for a minimum of 7 days.
