You must already be working as a Federal Aviation Safety Officer (also called an ASO), including those in the military, to apply for this certification.
To earn the initial ICAP Federal ASO Certificate, you need to complete an approved ASO course. Some examples are:
- The University of Southern California Safety & Security course
- DOT-TSI SMS and Safety Program Management
- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University ASO course
- Southern California Safety Institute ASO course
- One of the Armed Forces ASO courses.
Alternatively, you can provide college transcripts showing you have completed the five required basic ASO courses:
- Basic Aviation Accident Investigation
- Human Factors
- Aviation Risk Management
- Aviation Safety Program Management/Safety Management Systems (SMS)
- Legal Aspects of Aviation
You must renew your certificate every two years. To renew the ICAP Federal ASO certificate, you must:
- Complete 16 hours of continuing education every two years.
- Submit the renewal application.
ICAP will count up to 4 hours of classes you teach in this field toward the continuing education requirement. The other 12 hours must be from other sources.
ASOs are encouraged to attend the ICAP ASO workshop, held every 18 months.
You can email completed renewal applications to aviationpolicy@gsa.gov. If you attend the ICAP ASO workshop, ICAP will automatically update and mail your ASO certificate. Please remember, the ASO Workshop is for continuing education, not for initial ASO certification.
Please email completed initial applications to aviationpolicy@gsa.gov.
