Our mission’s evolution
Established by President Harry Truman on July 1, 1949, our agency was initially tasked with streamlining federal administrative work by consolidating various agencies. Our original mission focused on disposing of war surplus goods, managing government records, ensuring emergency preparedness, and stockpiling strategic supplies.
Over the decades, our mission has significantly evolved to provide stewardship over the government’s real estate, acquisition services, and technology. Today, we offer workspaces for federal employees, oversee the preservation of historic buildings, and facilitate the federal government’s procurement of high-quality goods, services, and technology.
Notable advancements include developing government-wide real property policy, launching the Acquisition Gateway to unify federal buyers, and pioneering federal technology initiatives like GSA SmartPay and the Presidential Innovation Fellows program.
We support reductions in federal government real estate costs and increases in workplace efficiencies by strategically integrating space, people, and technology solutions customized to different workplace needs.
How we are funded
A small portion of our total budget is provided through direct congressional appropriations. The majority of our operating costs are recovered through the products and services we provide. Read more about our budget and performance.
