Since 1963, we have played a key role in ensuring the peaceful transfer of power during presidential transitions. We support eligible candidates before and after the election, interagency transition teams, the presidential inauguration, outgoing presidents and vice presidents when there is a change in administration, and, as necessary with the National Archives and Records Administration, former presidents in establishing and maintaining their presidential libraries. This support includes office space, equipment, payment of compensation for office staff, and funding for certain authorized transition-related expenses.
Our Administrator appoints a Federal Transition Coordinator to oversee these activities, with guidance from the White House Transition Coordinating Council and the Agency Transition Directors Council.
The Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act of 2022 streamlined the process for providing transition services, eliminating the prior requirement for our agency to make an affirmative “ascertainment” before transition support services can be provided.
