Our goal has been clear, to improve efficiency, increase accountability, and deliver services that put the needs of the nation first.   • 1949

    GSA is established

    Our agency was established by the Federal Property and Administrative Services Act to streamline federal administrative work, including real estate, procurement, and information technology.

  • 1950s

    Launch of the Federal Supply Schedule Program

    The Federal Supply Schedule program is created to simplify the process for federal agencies to purchase products and services.

  • 1960s

    Communications for agencies

    The Federal Telecommunications System, a governmentwide intercity telephone network is created.


    Introduction of the Automated Data Processing Schedule

    We began managing the procurement of automated data processing equipment, laying the groundwork for modern IT procurement practices.

  • 1970s

    Modernizing governmentwide computer operations

    We streamlined governmentwide computer and telecommunications operations by merging its Automated Data Processing and telecommunications components and reassigning transportation functions to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

  • 1980s

    Implementation of the Federal Information Resources Management Regulation

    We issued FIRMR to govern the acquisition, management, and use of information technology resources across federal agencies.


    Modern finance

    We introduced the first government charge card, now used by more than 3.5 million federal employees.


    FTS2000 is launched

    Provided a unified telecommunications network for federal agencies, replacing the previous fragmented and outdated systems. It improved efficiency, reduced costs, and enhanced communication capabilities across the federal government.

  • 1990s

    Courthouse constructions standards

    Courthouse Management Group is formed to oversee major courthouse construction projects.

  • 2000s

    Creation of the Federal Acquisition Service 

    FAS is established to streamline acquisition services, including the management of the Multiple Award Schedule program.

  • 2010s

    Adoption of cloud computing and IT modernization

    We led the charge in adopting cloud computing services and modernizing IT infrastructure across federal agencies, improving efficiency and security. This included becoming the first agency to move email to the cloud.

  • 2020s

    Support during the COVID-19 pandemic

    We played a crucial role in providing resources and support to federal agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the procurement of personal protective equipment, or PPE, and facilitating remote work solutions.

  • 2025

    Achieving more through efficient government

    We delivered billions in savings through stronger real estate management, streamlined regulations, and better contract terms, and at the same time drove modernization across government systems, expanded secure cloud options, and strengthened America’s leadership in AI.
