About the community

Established in 2020 in partnership with the Office of the Federal Chief Information Officer at the Office of Management and Budget, the AI CoP is instrumental in guiding the practical implementation of responsible AI within the federal government. We facilitate this through a variety of channels, including a newsletter, events, and active working groups.

Authorities

The AI CoP operates under the following authorities:

  • 41 USC 1703: Public Law 117-207, Oct. 17, 2022
  • M-25-21: Accelerating Federal Use of AI through Innovation, Governance, and Public Trust [PDF]
  • M-25-22: Driving Efficient Acquisition of Artificial Intelligence in Government [PDF]
  • Executive Order: Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence
  • Executive Order: Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth

Vision

To embed the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning as a fully integrated and normalized practice within the U.S. Government, enhancing efficiency, innovation, and public service.

Mission

The purpose of the AI CoP is to promote the responsible, trustworthy, and effective adoption of AI technologies across the federal enterprise. We cultivate a comprehensive knowledge base and an inter-agency forum that empowers the government workforce with best practices, tools, and resources for the ethical and effective deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Goals

  • Collaboration and knowledge sharing
Serve as the link between the public, private and education sectors. Foster collaboration among federal agencies, industry partners, and academia to share experiences, lessons learned, technology overviews and success stories related to AI adoption and innovation.
  • Continuous learning
Encourage continuous learning and professional development opportunities for AI practitioners, including learning sessions on AI ethics, emerging technologies, regulatory compliance, and technical advancements.

Leadership

The AI CoP is organized under our Office of Governmentwide Policy and Office of Technology Policy, serving as a pivotal network for government employees engaged in or interested in artificial intelligence. It is managed by the CoP Executive Steering Committee, who provides leadership, facilitates meetings, assists in setting the agenda, and coordinates the activities of the community. The Executive Steering Committee meets monthly at a minimum. Members of the committee include:

  • Bridget Carper, Deputy Chief Information Officer, DOE
  • Christopher Alvarez, Chief Data Officer, USDA
  • David Gaston, Chief AI Officer, NLRB
  • Gio Altamirano Rayo, Chief Data Scientist, DOS
  • Kathy Kim, Office of the Chief Information Officer, OMB
  • Michael Hauck, Acting Chief Data Officer, NSF
  • Zach Whitman, Chief AI Officer, GSA
