Officials celebrate opening of state-of-the-art NOAA facility

On August 1, GSA, NOAA, and Condyne Capital Partners, LLC co-hosted a ribbon cutting event to officially welcome the National Weather Service (NWS) into their new home in Norton, Mass.

Master of Ceremonies David Vallee, hydrologist-in-charge, welcomed speakers Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Chief Operating Officer for the NWS John Murphy, GSA Acting Regional Administrator Glenn Rotondo, Director for NWS Eastern Region Jason Tuell, Norton Town Manager Michael Yunits, President of Condyne Capital Partners Jeffrey O’Neill, and approximately 100 attendees to the new state-of-the-art facility.

The building, situated on 5.4 acres of land, replaces the NWS office, formerly located in Taunton, Mass. It houses the local weather forecast office and the regional center.

"GSA provides cutting-edge workplace solutions while delivering cost savings and value for the taxpayer through smart asset management,” said Rotondo. “And that is what you see here. This new construction was designed inside and out with the National Weather Service’s input.”

“They have different missions and different scales of operations. The floor layout was designed to accommodate that - again, with the National Weather Service’s input,” continued Rotondo.

NOAA’s mission is to provide life-saving weather and water forecasts to the public to keep them informed, and the advanced technology in this new facility helps the agency fulfill their mission.

“Being unprepared for and unaware of extreme weather can have life-threatening consequences in our communities. With this advanced facility, NOAA and NWS can not only study our region’s weather patterns, but alert our neighbors whenever powerful, dangerous storms may be approaching,” said Congressman Joe Kennedy III.

In addition to the keynote speakers, the ceremony featured the Norton Police Department Honor Guard and Glenn Field, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, who sang the National Anthem and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
