Chicago federal building receives Modernism in America Award

CHICAGO – The renovation project for the Chicago Federal Plaza U.S. Post Office won a 2021 Modernism in America Civic/Institutional Design Award of Excellence from Docomomo US.

The Loop Station Post Office, a steel frame structure built in 1973 and located at 211 South Clark Street in Chicago, was designed by world-renowned German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969). Situated on the northwest corner of the Chicago Federal Plaza, the building underwent a complete exterior facade restoration in 2020, which included repairs to the steel frame and repainting of the exterior using a custom paint system to match the original Miesian black paint.

The building retains its significant architectural features and has been preserved by the General Services Administration (GSA) in a manner true to Mies van der Rohe’s original design intent. The building was designated in 2011 to the National Register of Historic Places.

“GSA’s expertise and commitment to preservation and high quality civic space could not be better recognized than by earning this prestigious award,” said GSA’s Public Buildings Service Commissioner Nina Albert. “Throughout all the work we do, we strive to not only serve our federal partners, but also to honor the history and vibrancy of the communities we serve.”
