Consolidation Continues Through Telework in Region 8

New sign for OSMRE

A mandatory telework order for Region 8 has not stopped a consolidation effort to bring two offices from the Department of Interior (DOI) into the Denver Federal Center’s Building 41 which not only optimizes the federal footprint, but also realizes some lease cost savings.

This project consolidates two components of the DOI’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) agency - their Western Regional office which is moving from a leased location in downtown Denver,  and their Department of Financial Management which is moving from owned space at the Denver Federal Center.

The consolidation results in an overall 38% reduction in total square footage realized by leveraging new workplace strategies using smart design and space saving storage systems. Specific to Lease Cost Avoidance, this overall consolidation will save the government more than $6.2 million.

COVID-19 slowed this project down but it did not completely stop it. While most of the furniture was installed prior to the mandatory telework order, close coordination was required to ensure that the movers did not overlap with the construction contractors who were completing final installation activities.

“The GSA team worked together when scheduling the movers so as to not overlap with the final installation and/or construction contractors” said Carin Demmon, GSA Space Planner/Interior Designer.

This was necessary for social distancing as well as project monitoring and control. The team relied heavily on its relationship with the contractor project manager and superintendent. They had daily calls and shared photos when needed.

The well managed and coordinated effort has allowed for progress on this consolidation to continue despite the constraints of this unprecedented time.
