Hackathon Helps U.S. Government Go "Green"

WASHINGTON —  On April 22, the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) hosted and Earth Day Hackathon. The event attracted 49 industry professionals, students, and government employees who came together in GSA’s headquarters to create new, more efficient solutions to make the federal government more sustainable.

GSA’s Chief Information Officer David Shive, welcomed the developers and spoke to the value of collaboration. “This event is about citizens helping government serve citizens,” he said, “the solution this group develops will help the federal government do more to protect the environment.”

Four participating teams were awarded prizes:

  • Teams CGI Digital and ICF developed improved data visualizations and web interface associated with climate change indicator data for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Team CVP won for developed a new web application for the National Institute of Standards and Technology that allows for selection and comparison of building products’ economic and environmental performance based on the user needs and preferences.
  • Team Smokey and the Bandits, from ICF, developed methods to present and compare performance on energy and water use in U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service facilities.
