Created by an act of Congress in 1870, the U. S. Department of Justice incorporates the Office of the Attorney General with a wide range of activities that pertain to the enforcement of federal law, public safety, and ensuring the impartial administration of justice for all Americans. The Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building is the first and only permanent home of the Department of Justice. Completed in 1935, the classically inspired building combines a Greek-Revival style with art deco elements. The building's interior includes numerous murals and sculptures, illustrating the benefits of a society in which justice prevails. These works were sponsored during the building's construction as part of the New Deal art programs.
