GSA to Open Additional Southbound Vehicle Lane at Calexico West Port of Entry

Traffic Advisory

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2017

What: The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will open an additional temporary southbound vehicle lane at the Calexico West Land Port of Entry (LPOE) on April 3, 2017, at 8 a.m., to reduce traffic congestion for drivers traveling southbound on the California State Route 111 (SR-111) into Mexico.

Opening the additional lane was initiated in response to traffic congestion resulting from the January closure of one southbound vehicle lane that was required for the installation of underground utilities as part of the Calexico Expansion and Renovation Project. GSA worked with the US. Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection, Caltrans, Imperial Valley Transportation Commission, and the City of Calexico to develop a plan to address congestion along Imperial Avenue during ongoing construction activities.

On April 3, at 8 a.m., the westernmost lane of the SR-111 North at the port will be reconfigured to accommodate southbound vehicle traffic just south of the intersection of East 2nd Street and Imperial Avenue. This will allow GSA to complete essential construction work at the port, while increasing overall southbound vehicle capacity.

All southbound vehicle lanes are projected to reopen June 10, 2017, at 12:00 p.m., and the temporary southbound lane will return to its previous configuration to accommodate northbound vehicles.

Drivers should anticipate reduced speeds and altered traffic patterns through the construction area and are encouraged to monitor posted signage.

When:  April 3, 2017, at 8 a.m., through June 10, 2017, at 12:00 p.m.

Note: Southbound travelers have the option to utilize Calexico East LPOE as an alternate route to Mexico via California SR-7. The daily hours of operation for southbound crossing to Mexico through the Calexico East LPOE are 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Southbound crossing through Calexico West LPOE is open 24 hours a day, every day.
