The mission of ATF is to protect communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, the illegal use and storage of explosives, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products.

The Ariel Rios Federal Building was constructed in 2008 to consolidate the functions of ATF headquarters employees into one secure location in Northeast, Washington DC. The facility was one of the first constructed in the newly revitalized neighborhood of North of Massachusetts Avenue (NoMa) and serves as a getaway to the busy New York Avenue corridor of the city.
