Building design
The John E. Moss Federal Building opened in 1961 and was named after the author of the federal Freedom of Information Act and Congressman for California's 3rd Congressional District. The eight-story, 355,000 square-foot building was one of the first constructed as part of the Capitol Mall redevelopment of that era. For 37 years, the Moss Building served as a federal courthouse for the newly created U.S. Eastern District of California.
Several prominent Sacramento architects, including Harry J. Devine Sr., Albert Dreyfuss, Kenneth Rickey, and Fred Brooks, played roles in the building’s design. Today, the Moss Building hosts the General Services Administration’s Sacramento Field Office, other federal agencies and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018
