GSA Administrator, Mayor Hogsett, and Congressman Carson Highlight Local Priorities in the President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2017 Budget
Funding would support the completed restoration of the Minton-Capehart Federal Building
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Denise Turner Roth was joined by Congressman André Carson, Mayor Joe Hogsett, and other local representatives to outline how President Obama’s fiscal year 2017 budget request supports needed infrastructure investment, including a $10.7M project to complete the restoration of the Minton-Capehart Federal Building. The proposed project builds on years of GSA investment in Indianapolis, and demonstrates how GSA can act as an economic catalyst for development in communities across the country.
GSA completed a $49 million upgrade to much of the Minton-Capehart Federal Building in 2012. This request would complete that restoration, restoring the parking garage that is over 40 years old and is in urgent need of renovation. Interim short-term repairs have been undertaken in an attempt to address immediate safety measures. The corrosion, spalling, and delamination of the structure is threatening tenant and property safety and sections of the garage have been closed down due to the risk.
“Completing the restoration of the Minton-Capehart Federal Building is a smart infrastructure investment that builds on the significant investments GSA has made in Indianapolis,” said Roth. “This funding will support a safe and reliable federal building while supporting development in this community.”
“This funding will help improve the services provided at this important federal building, including Social Security and Veterans Affairs. The much needed building repairs will make the 40-year old structure safer and add a welcome investment to economic development in Marion County,” said Rep. André Carson. “Local, state and federal officials have long shared the goal of renovating this site to make it a safe and more efficient resource for the city of Indianapolis.”
“This proposed investment from the federal government is a testament to the partnership between our community, GSA and the hard work of Representative Carson and his staff to return tax dollars to Indianapolis,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “These repairs will ensure the Minton-Capehart Federal Building can effectively serve the residents of central Indiana for years to come.”
