GSA Administrator Highlights Agency’s Innovative Technology Strategy at Denver “Smart Cities Smart Counties” Conference

Denver, Co. -- Today, the General Services Administration’s (GSA) Administrator, Denise Turner Roth, delivered the keynote address at the “Smart Cities and Counties II: Beyond the Hype, Where Innovation Rules” conference convened by the Public Technology Institute. In addition to GSA’s commitment to be an economic catalyst in our communities through our buildings and acquisition work, the agency is at the forefront of modernizing the federal government’s IT infrastructure. Administrator Roth highlighted the Administration’s efforts to deliver well-built and secure technology that can better serve the American people.

Given GSA’s leadership in technology, from helping agencies securely transition to the cloud to providing common authentication services, the Obama Administration has tasked GSA with major responsibilities under its recently announced Cybersecurity National Action Plan. As part of the Fiscal Year 2017 budget request, GSA is to deploy a proposed $3.1 billion Information Technology Modernization Fund (ITMF). The goal of the fund is to retire the government’s legacy IT systems and transition to more secure and efficient technology. The ITMF would also provide funding to streamline technology governance and secure federal networks.

“GSA plays a key role in driving federal government technology efforts,” GSA Administrator Roth said, “We serve as the one-stop-shop that federal agencies depend on to develop and deploy state-of-the-art tools, allowing them to focus on their core missions in service to the American people which, after all, is the reason we choose to work in government.”
