GSA announces Congressional authorization of Des Moines Courthouse

DES MOINES, IOWA — The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) received authorization from Congress for the new Des Moines Courthouse for $136.6 million for the site acquisition, design and construction of a new 230,000-square-foot U.S. Courthouse. The proposed facility will provide nine courtrooms and 13 chambers to replace the aging courthouse in downtown Des Moines and a leased courthouse annex.

“We’re extremely proud of the team of professionals who are working to bring this economic catalyst to Des Moines,” said GSA Regional Administrator Jason Klumb. “Our experts have worked diligently to get to this exciting next step.”

GSA will strategically use this opportunity to balance the needs of the courts with the potential for economic development. Similar projects have contributed to reducing the Government’s environmental footprint, creating valuable savings, and serving the neighborhoods where we reside in a positive way.

“The City of Des Moines is excited to continue to partner with Federal agencies and local judges to bring this vibrant opportunity to our city,” said Mayor Frank Cownie.

Site selection is ongoing and responses to the advertised Request for Expressions of Interest are being reviewed. GSA continues its due diligence in anticipation of identifying a site by next spring and acquiring the site by fall of 2017. The design is expected to start this spring with construction slated to begin in 2019 and the project is expected to be completed in 2022.

“We appreciate their investment in Des Moines as this project will be a catalyst for our continued redevelopment,” said Cownie.

Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects from Atlanta, in a joint venture with Neumann Monson Architects of Des Moines, has been selected as the design team for the project.
