Groundbreaking event held for new U.S. Courthouse for the Middle District of Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA – More than 120 guests joined the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) on June 25, 2018 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for a groundbreaking ceremony on a new courthouse for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Spanning approximately four acres, the new 243,000 gross-square-foot courthouse will provide eight courtrooms, 11 chambers and 42 indoor parking spaces. The new facility will also provide workspace for the U.S. Court Library, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Trustee Program.

“GSA’s mission is to deliver the best value in real estate to government and the American people,” said GSA Regional Administrator Joyce Haas. “Through the partnerships we’ve developed at the federal, state and local levels, the new U.S. Courthouse will be a 21st century facility that will benefit both the city of Harrisburg, our federal partners and the community of users who pass through it every day.”

Ceremony and groundbreaking participants included Pennsylvania Congressmen Scott Perry, William F. Shuster and Louis J. Barletta, Chief Judge D. Brooks Smith of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Judges Sylvia H. Rambo and John E. Jones III of the Middle District of Pennsylvania and Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse. Chief Judge Christopher C. Conner of the U.S. Middle District of Pennsylvania provided the keynote address.

"Our success is a result of the commitment, cooperation and collaboration of many,” said GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner Dan Mathews. “Thank you to the members of Congress, judges, our design and construction companies, GSA staff and the community for your hard work, dedication and support of this project."

The $192.7 million project was designed by Ennead Architects of New York. Construction began in May 2018 by Mascaro Construction Company LP of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is slated to be completed by fall 2021.

Mid-Atlantic Region Tours Manufacturing Facilities

During the week of April 30, Region 3 FAS Regional Commissioner Dena McLaughlin, R3 Category Manager Michael Shepherd and the IWAC leadership team (Brian Knapp, John Breen, Jeffery Calhoun and Ivana Henry) met with and toured the manufacturing facilities of five leading Schedule 71 furniture contractors with headquarters in Western Michigan (Steelcase, Herman Miller, Haworth, Trendway and RT London). These visits afforded the team the opportunity to learn more about new trends in the industry; understand design, manufacturing, and testing processes that can impact total cost of ownership; and gain industry insight into the buying behaviors of our federal customers.
