GSA Awards Contracts for Pensacola Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse
ATLANTA, GA -- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has made two recent contract awards associated with the U.S. District Courthouse located at 1 North Palafox Street, Pensacola, Fla. (“Pensacola Courthouse”). The Pensacola Courthouse is slated to undergo repair and alterations beginning in January. W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Company, Biloxi, Miss. was awarded the contract for construction; and AFG Group Inc. of Herndon, Va. was awarded the contract to provide construction management and commissioning services.
GSA moved the courts and associated agencies to a temporary lease location in 2015. The repair and alterations project comprises replacing the building’s façade and the standing seam metal roof system to prevent water intrusion, along with repairing structural damage and abating mold resulting from past water intrusion. The project will upgrade the fire safety system and the heating ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system to include installation of variable air volume (VAV) boxes and a new building automation system to better control the interior humidity. The existing restrooms in the building will be upgraded with new floor drains and finishes and will be modified to provide full access as prescribed by the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standard (ABAAS). In addition, the grounds and approaches will be restored and the parking area will be repaved, along with other upgrades to improve stormwater drainage.
“This project will correct the water intrusion and bring the facility into compliance with the State of Florida’s most recent hurricane requirements,” said GSA’s Southeast Sunbelt Regional Commissioner for the Public Buildings Service, Mike Goodwin. “The project has benefited from a strong working relationship between GSA, the U.S. District Court and the City of Pensacola.”
“The Court appreciates the efforts of all involved in the project design and looks forward to the next phase of actual construction, and of course to the day when the courthouse is finally re-opened to the public and able to fully perform its mission,” said M. Casey Rodgers, Chief Judge, United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida.
“Beginning in the first few months of 2018, the community should expect to see the site being prepared for construction,” said GSA Project Manager Steven Smith. “Preparations will include the installation of a temporary perimeter fence and other safety measures around the site to protect the public. Construction equipment and materials will also begin arriving at the site.”
The facility will house judicial functions serving the Northern District of Florida to include a total of five courtrooms. Additionally, the U.S. Senate will have an office in the building along with the U.S. Attorneys Office, the U.S. Marshals Service and GSA.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2018 and conclude September 2019.
