GSA announces soft-close date for the public auction of the Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Lighthouse in Chassell, Michigan

CHICAGO – The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has set the soft-close date for the auction of the Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Lighthouse in Chassell, Michigan, for Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, at 2 p.m. CT.

GSA is offering the Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Lighthouse for sale by public auction. This is one of a record number of lighthouses being offered in 2023 to government agencies, nonprofits, and the public.

Opened in 1919, the Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Lighthouse – also known as the Portage Entry Light or the Portage Lake Lower Entry Light – is located at the end of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers breakwater in Houghton County, Michigan.

Property Details:

  • Marking the southern end of the Portage River, the lighthouse stands 68 feet tall. 
  • The light contains approximately 1,000 square feet of interior space. 
  • In 2014, the light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 
  • The property will remain an active aid to navigation.
  • The deed will contain historic preservation covenants.

Closing Rules:

This auction will end in one of these ways:

  • At the auction close time, if no bids (proxy or flat) are placed within the inactivity period – defined as the previous 24 hours.
  • After the inactivity period has passed without any bids (proxy or flat) being placed.
  • At the close of the auction, the high bid will be considered for acceptance by the government. The government reserves the right to accept or reject any or all bids.

There is still time for those interested in bidding to register and submit bids. To do so:

  • Those interested in bidding are required to register in advance and submit a $10,000 registration deposit.
  • Bid increments will be $1,000.,
