GSA To Build High-Performance Green Building on Denver Federal Center Campus
Building will meet federal energy and water conservation goals
DENVER - The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is moving forward with renovations of a vacant facility on the Denver Federal Center Campus starting on May 25 to convert the building to net-zero energy and net-zero carbon office space.
GSA recently awarded a Design-Build contract to Centerre Construction, Inc., with Cannon Design providing design services, in order to transform the 150,000 square foot facility to energy-efficient modern workspace for the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Interior Business Center (IBC).
“Our main focus was to completely transform this mid-century warehouse into a state-of-the-art and energy efficient office space that celebrates the mission of the IBC and will also be a dynamic work environment for them to retain and attract new employees,” said David Hritz, Centerre Construction.
The vacant building once housed the National Archives and Records Administration, which moved out of the facility in 2013.
The $49 million project will convert the empty warehouse to sustainable office space, including the use of solar power, LED lighting and high efficiency heating and cooling systems that will bring the building to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standard. The exterior of the building will feature conservation efforts that will make the grounds SITES Silver certified. The landscape design will include adaptable trees, pollinator gardens and bioswales for conservation of water and connection to nature.
“We are taking a vacant, underperforming building and transforming it into adaptive, modern and energy-efficient space to suit the business needs of the IBC,” said Public Buildings Service Regional Commissioner Tanisha Harrison.
This project will move IBC out of three leased facilities and into federally-owned space that will save $17 million in lease cost avoidance and $6 million annually in rental savings.
The IBC is expected to move into the newly remodeled facility in 2023.
