GSA to support $10 million for Bennett Federal Building upgrades funded by the Inflation Reduction Act
Project will use low-carbon materials
SALT LAKE CITY - The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) plans to invest $10 million to replace aging curtain wall windows and repair plaza infrastructure for a project at the Wallace F. Bennett Building in Salt Lake City.
GSA is exploring a curtain wall window replacement that will increase the building’s energy efficiency, lower the cost of recurring utilities and improve tenant satisfaction. By utilizing low-embodied carbon materials such as asphalt, concrete, glass and steel, this project will increase the use of low-embodied carbon materials. This project will be funded through the Inflation Reduction Act and is one of more than 150 low-embodied carbon projects that GSA announced on November 6, 2023.
“GSA is committed to support the use of building materials that help reduce the effects of climate change with products made right here in America,” said Rocky Mountain Regional Administrator Denise Maes. “Upgrading this facility is also prudent to help reduce our energy costs and save taxpayer dollars.”
The project marks another step toward achieving President Biden’s federal sustainability goals, including a net zero emissions federal building portfolio by 2045, and net zero emissions procurement by 2050, while supporting good American manufacturing jobs.
The Inflation Reduction Act includes $3.4 billion for GSA to further market research and development of low-embodied carbon materials, and to build more sustainable and cost-efficient high-performance facilities. GSA’s Inflation Reduction Act projects will implement new technologies. Through these investments, GSA estimates that it could reduce carbon emissions by 2.3 million metric tons in operational greenhouse gas emissions. That is the equivalent of taking about 500,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for one year.
