GSA releases new design for Savannah Courthouse Annex
ATLANTA (May 8, 2018) – The U.S. General Services Administration today unveiled a revised design for the Savannah Courthouse Annex.
The revised design complements the unique character of the Savannah Historic District and recognizes the community’s commitment to preserve elements of the city plan developed by founder James Oglethorpe. Under the new design, the facility will be built on the south trust lot (an area reserved for civic structures in Oglethorpe’s plan), leaving West President Street intact.
“We received considerable feedback from the community on our initial designs for the Savannah Courthouse Annex,” said Michael Goodwin, regional commissioner for GSA’s Public Buildings Service. “We listened and took those concerns seriously. We now have a design that better reflects the historic fabric of the city of Savannah and is respectful of Oglethorpe's plan while still meeting our goals of enhancing security and improving available workspace for Judiciary employees.”
The 35,000-square-foot annex will house a new bankruptcy courtroom and related chambers, as well as a new office for the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services System.
Construction on the new facility will begin in late 2018 and is slated for completion by fall of 2020. The construction of the annex will coincide with rehabilitation of the historic Tomochichi Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, located across Whitaker Street from the new facility.
