Federal Leaders and Local Officials Hold Groundbreaking Event for New Federal Courthouse in San Antonio
Construction begins this Spring
SAN ANTONIO -- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Emily Murphy, U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, U.S. Representatives Lloyd Doggett, Henry Cuellar, Joaquin Castro, William Hurd and Chip Roy, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, and the U.S. District Courts joined for the groundbreaking of the new federal courthouse in historic downtown San Antonio.
“A core part of GSA’s mission is to deliver value through real estate to support the critical missions of our partners across the federal government,” said GSA Administrator Emily Murphy. “We are proud to partner with our colleagues in the judicial branch, Congress, and leaders in the San Antonio community as we begin work on this state-of-the-art facility that will soon be home to the federal courts here and their supporting agencies.”
The John H. Wood, Jr. U.S. Courthouse was originally constructed as the U.S. Pavilion for the 1968 Worlds HemisFair. In 1974, it was renovated to house the federal courts and court related functions. Over the years, the courts have expanded and currently occupy several facilities around the San Antonio area. Upon completion of the facility, the courts and their supporting supporting court agencies will move from the John H. Wood, Jr. U.S. Courthouse and other local facilities, to the newly constructed courthouse. The new courthouse will provide the space needed for consolidation as well as upgraded design and security requirements.
General information about the new federal courthouse:
- The new facility will be located on approximately 6.3 acres in historic downtown San Antonio at the corner of Santa Rosa Avenue and Nueva Street (214 W. Nueva Street).
- The new courthouse will have 8 courtrooms (5 district, 2 magistrate, and 1 special proceeding), and 13 chambers (8 district, 3 magistrate and 2 Court of Appeals).
- The tenant agencies will include the U.S District Courts, U.S. Clerk of the Court for the Western District of Texas, U.S. Magistrate Courts, U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services, Federal Public Defender, U.S. Court of Appeals, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Attorneys and GSA.
- The new courthouse will be ready for occupancy in 2022.
