General Services Administration releases draft Environmental Impact Statement, announces public hearing in support of Alcan port project in Alaska

TACOMA, Wash. – In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will host a public hearing regarding the proposed expansion and modernization of the Alcan Land Port of Entry on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at 6 p.m. AKDT. The hearing will give the public an opportunity to comment on the recently-published draft Environmental Impact Statement [PDF - 20 MB], which analyzes the potential social, economic and environmental impacts resulting from the proposed project at the Alaskan port. The draft Environmental Impact Statement and the link to register for the public hearing are available at www.GSA.gov/Alcan

The Alcan port is the only year-round, full service, 24-hour port of entry serving personal vehicles and commercial truck traffic between Yukon Territory, Canada, and Interior Alaska. The port is situated in a remote location along the Alaska Highway. The proposed Alcan land port expansion project, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will enhance the port’s operational efficiency and capability, providing new, modern and energy efficient facilities to house port operations and processing functions. This project will strengthen the supply chain, create good-paying jobs, enhance safety and security, and serve as a model of sustainability. When completed, the project will improve the flow of traffic and address projected traffic volumes.
