GSA Announces Public Auction for Penfield Reef Lighthouse in Bridgeport, Conn.

BOSTON – The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is auctioning the Penfield Reef Lighthouse in Bridgeport, Conn., as part of its mission to deliver value and savings in real estate, acquisition, technology, and other mission support services across the government.

The Penfield Reef Lighthouse is an offshore lighthouse in Fairfield County, Connecticut that marks a submerged reef which extends southeast from Fairfield Beach near the Town of Fairfield into Long Island Sound. It is located approximately one (1) mile from the entrance of Black Rock Harbor in the City of Bridgeport and is accessible by boat only.

Property Details:

The Property includes a 51-foot-tall octagonal lighthouse and a two-story, 1,568 square foot keeper’s quarters. The Second Empire Style lighthouse was built in 1874. In 2015, the Property was weatherized, and the exterior was restored to reflect its 19th century appearance. A full list of renovations can be found in the Invitation for Bids on the GSA Auction site [PDF]. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (reference #89001473). The Property will remain an active aid to navigation.

The auction will open on June 21, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. (CT). Those interested in bidding are required to register in advance and submit a $10,000 registration deposit. The starting bid will be $100,000, and bid increments will be $10,000. Site inspections will only be offered to registered bidders.
