GSA Announces Public Sale by Auction of Oil & Gas Mineral Rights in Big Spring, Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas – Today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced the public auction of the oil & gas mineral rights of approximately 133 total net mineral acres in Big Spring, Texas. This strategic disposition of surplus federal property underscores GSA’s commitment to optimizing the federal footprint and ensuring the efficient stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

“GSA is proactively divesting underutilized assets, and this public auction sale of mineral rights in Big Spring, is a prime example of our dedication to delivering the best value for American taxpayers,” said GSA Acting Administrator Michael Rigas. “By strategically leveraging the value of the government’s portfolio, we are ensuring responsible use of federal resources and contributing to economic growth.”

This auction pertains exclusively to subsurface mineral rights. The land surface, which is held by a combination of public and private owners, is excluded from this sale.

Mineral right details:

  • Located within the Big Spring city limits in Howard County, Texas.  
  • Sections:
    • Section 2, Block 33, T1S: 50.4087 acres with a 50% mineral interest.
    • Section 11, Block 33, T1S: 108.40 acres with a 100% mineral interest.
  • Depth: Between 4,800 and 10,605 feet below the surface.
  • Total Area: Approximately 133.6044 total net mineral acres.
  • The auctioned mineral rights grant the owner the authority, under Texas state and local laws and regulations, to explore and produce oil and gas from specified underground formations.

Auction details:

  • The online auction started on September 15 and will conclude only after a specified period of inactivity from bidders on or after December 26.
  • Interested parties are required to register in advance and submit a $50,000 registration deposit to be considered a bidder.
