General Services Administration completes Northbound Lane Expansion Project at Calexico West Land Port of Entry
16 total vehicle lanes will increase inspection capacity and ease crossing wait times
CALEXICO, Calif. ㅡ The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announces the completion of new northbound vehicle inspection booths at the Calexico West Land Port of Entry (LPOE) in South Imperial County, California. The $191 million project increases the number of vehicle inspection booths from 10 to 16 and added pre-primary inspection canopies for additional shade for officers and the traveling public, safety and security – a part of the larger port modernization and expansion project. The additional 60 percent increase in vehicle inspection capacity will allow the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to better facilitate vehicle processing and help ease border crossing wait times.
“The six new lanes represent a major improvement for the people who rely on this facility and the Imperial Valley’s economic vitality. By increasing cross border capacity this project makes a difference for the thousands of people who use the port every day,” explained Anthony Kleppe, GSA Region 9 LPOE Program Manager. “Beyond creating additional queueing and inspection capacity, these new lanes, along with the current pre-primary vehicle canopy project, should improve the travelers’ experience, alleviate congestion and reduce wait times.”
The pre-primary inspection canopies will add over 33,000 square feet of shade at a critical border crossing point. In 2023, the Calexico West border crossing saw more than 8.2 million vehicles and 3 million pedestrians enter the U.S.
“This is a significant step forward in the port modernization and expansion project, and a testament to the dedication and commitment of all involved,” stated Roque Caza, CBP’s Calexico Area Port Director. “Our goal is to promote lawful trade and travel and to enhance the lives of thousands of people from the region who transit through our port of entry daily.”
In 2019, GSA received $191 million to fund Phase 2A of the project. Construction of Phase 2A began in May 2020 and included the construction of six additional northbound vehicle inspection lanes, a pre-primary canopy covering the span of 16 northbound lanes, the expansion of the secondary vehicle inspection area and canopy, construction of a new administrative building, five new southbound vehicle inspection booths and port personnel parking. All phase 2A work is estimated to be completed in Spring 2024.
