The veterans’ hiring pathway offers accelerated, direct routes into federal employment by matching your military experience with critical civilian roles. These special authorities bypass the traditional, lengthy application process to get your resume straight to hiring managers.
The core hiring paths and authorities are:
- Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment — VRAs allow us to hire eligible veterans non-competitively up to the GS-11 grade level.
- Veterans Employment Opportunities Act — VEOA eligibility allows you to apply to merit promotion jobs that are otherwise closed to the public.
- 30% or More Disabled Veteran — We can use special hiring authority to place veterans with a 30% or higher service-connected disability into any position.
Requirements
To qualify, you must be a former service member with an honorable character of service and a qualifying period or condition of service.
You must have U.S. citizenship, or be a U.S. non-citizen national (a resident of American Samoa or Swain Island) to apply.
Please read the entire job announcement for any additional requirements.
Documentation
Include an updated federal resume along with your application. Your resume should speak to the duties and specialized experience sections of the job announcement, and should not be longer than two pages. As a veteran, you must also include:
- DD-214 (Member 4 copy) — Your Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, which shows your character of service.
- VA disability letter — A current, official letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs if you are claiming a service-connected disability rating.
- Standard Form 15 (SF-15) — A completed application for 10-Point Veteran Preference is required if you are claiming disabled veteran status.
Please review the entire job announcement for all required documentation as it may have more requirements than described here.
