The General Services Administration (GSA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are building a new 80,000 square-foot research lab at the Denver Federal Center.
The facility will provide FDA scientists modern laboratory space to test food, drugs, and cosmetics for safety and quality. This work supports FDA’s mission to protect public health and help ensure products meet federal safety standards.
The new building will include advanced scientific equipment and enhanced biosafety capabilities, making it the only high-level biosafety lab of its kind in the region. Expected to be completed in early 2029, the facility will strengthen the FDA’s ability to safeguard communities across the Midwest and western United States.
The project is officially under construction. The General Services Administration and Food and Drug Administration broke ground on June 17, 2026, and completion is estimated for early 2029.
Environmental review
In compliance with NEPA, the U.S. General Services Administration determined that a Categorical Exclusion (CATEX) checklist is the appropriate level of review for the proposed action. This checklist demonstrates that no extraordinary circumstances exist that requires an Environmental Assessment or Environmental Impact Statement.
